We need spice in our cabin. Until we can accumulate neat paintings or other works of art - random photos I have snapped of the farm will have to suffice. This hydrant is one contender. But debating which of the photos would be best….

It’s going to hang over our couch and be fairly large in size. Any thoughts??

I am thinking the more close up shots as then more artsy and not just a random photograph? Plus love that it says "Iowa" as our homestate. Also hate the power line that shows up in one of the photos....

These Boots are Jinxed!

I ordered these lovely boots last May from the Fort Western in Lincoln. I was told 4-6 weeks. 8+ weeks passed with no boots. After several phone calls I was finally informed they were backordered and would arrive “maybe” in October. WHAT??? It is not ok for you to hold money until at least October, and even worse was that you never called to update me on this change. Epic Fail Fort!

Recently a local feed store in town Lakeside Country Store started carrying boots (thanks for the tip Carol) and I was elated to find the same boots on the shelf! Yipppeee these boots are mine after all (bonus I had Christmas money to spend). I was super excited when only a week later they arrived. I picked them up only to notice parts of the boot were dark like expected and parts were a weird light brown. The salesladies told me they were just dry in those spots and with oil they will be fine. No worries, I’ll just wait while you fix them or I can come back later to pick up if that works better. Nope – I was told to just buy the oil and fix myself. I am sorry but these are brand spanking new $200+ boots. I am not going to “fix” them myself before I even wear them. Guess it was not my destiny to own those boots! I am disappointed in the poor customer service of both the Fort and Lakeside.

Fresh start as I am now determined to find cute new boots. All my country Blogger friends have been raving about Lane Boots. And I am impressed with their selection, plus the turquoise soles make these the Christian Louboutin version of boots.

I am pretty certain I want turquoise in the mix. I have narrowed it down::

My first Pinterest Delight

I love Pinterest!! I have several things I want to DIY, many rooms I would like to copy, and all kinds of yummy recipes saved up. You can follow me here. My first attempt was these delicious Energy Bites.

I made them last night and must brag a lil and say they turned out pretty darn great!

Here is the recipe in case you want to recreate. Easy peasy and super healthy
No-Bake Energy Bites
(makes 18-20 bites)

1 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup peanut butter (or other nut butter)
1/3 cup honey
1 cup coconut flakes
1/2 cup ground flaxseed
1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
1 tsp vanilla

Mix everything above in a medium bowl until thoroughly incorporated. Let chill in the refrigerator for half an hour. Once chilled, roll into balls and enjoy! Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated for up to 1 week.

Almost as Good as Country Roads

I live in “the city” ( big city dwellers may debate this fact) but am lucky that I have several great trail systems for running and biking within a few miles of my home.

One is Wabash Trace Nature Trail which I grew up near. Fond memories of soccer practice runs, walks with friends, and Thursday night Taco Rides.

It is still my go-to trail for long runs (although lately the River trail seems to top the list). It sure beats running through town with constant traffic, stop lights, and cat calls.

Luckily yesterday we had a high of around 45 degrees and no rain or snow for a small fraction of the day so I was able to squeeze 9 miles in. The best part was running into two of my close friends and fitness cohorts while out running! Seems everyone was capitalizing on the rare warm January weather.

A farm in Niobrara, NE (Kreycik Elk and Buffalo Ranch) has the neatest deer.

They are fallow deer which are Eurasian and native to most of Europe.

Essentialy miniature versions of our American Deer with really neat antlers.

Sunday evening a few of us went to the Max to witness the Divine Diva Show. Amazing!

Some of the costumes, hair, and makeup were out of this world!

It was highly entertaining to say the least. I may be a lil biased but I think “Courtney” was the standout of the evening with her outstanding costumes and performances!!

I am most envious of her boot collection.

All the jewelry is out and almost reminds me of going shopping in a boutique.

How fun would that be every day? I really need to kick myself into gear and finish my kitchen/bedroom/closet transformation I started over a year ago. Right now it’s half done and not that functional. My closets are bursting at the seams and my jewelry is stored in Longaberger baskets. Not overly functional.

I am always a lil bummed when New Years is over. So many fun holidays all in a row (my birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years) and then nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Just winter looming ahead. Plaza Lights

As a little girl my mom and I used to go stay on the Plaza in Kansas City for my birthday weekend to see the pretty lights and shop. This year we had the chance to stay there on Christmas Eve Eve and enjoy the gorgeous lights.

And take in a Chiefs game on Christmas Eve.

Every year I love decorating the outside of my home for the holidays. Sadly I am sans lights as no outdoor electrical outlet.

This year I felt like I had won the lottery as stumbled upon a grocery cart full of cut evergreen branches at a local tree stand/grocery store. I inquired and was told I could have them for FREE!! Yay for me. I think the manager thought I was bonkers.

Now we just need a TINY bit of snow and it will feel like Christmas. Aeisha kept a lookout for neighborhood bad guys while I decorated :)

Three Days and a Wake Up

Till Christmas morning!!! I am very excited for Christmas this year; My house is fully festive with Christmas cheer, I get to host my entire family for Brunch, I have fully enjoyed shopping for special presents for all those on my list, and have taken a lil extra time to wrap each package pretty.

We were even blessed with a lil dusting of pretty snow this morning to make things feel even more like Christmas. Just a few more presents to wrap and then it’s time to fully enjoy the holiday festivities.

My First Jackpot

Over the weekend I experienced my first Jackpot for Team Roping. In all honesty I had no idea what a jackpot even was until a few weeks ago! Still not sure I get the full concept as seemed very chaotic to me. I do know I loved the small relaxed atmosphere, the chance to chat with the cowboys between rounds, and watching a certain cowboy take 3rd! Guessing this may be the first of many Jackpots I attend…I should probably take my camera next time!

As a Y Board Member I helped take Santa photos a few weeks ago and it was WAY harder than I expected!! Some kids are petrified of Santa, others can’t sit still, madness I tell you. So kudos to all the parents, the Santa’s, and the photographers out there!!!

Habitat for Humanity

As seen here (and many other places) – the Mayor of Omaha and our Mayor made a bet over the IA v. NE football game. The looser had to build a home for habitat in the other town. So really there were no losers!

Iowa lost. So Mayor Hanafan recruited several of his favorite council members :) – the police chief, Community Development Director, and a few others and we spent a portion of our Saturday working on a Habitat home in Omaha.

I was tasked with the very skilled and difficult task of painting doors. Obviously I am lacking in home building skills so was happy to paint. It was very rewarding to know you are a part of something so great as providing a home to a family in need! Plus a great reminder at Christmas time that not everyone is as fortunate as I am.

I am hoping next year we have the Omaha crew in Council Bluffs working on one of our Habitat homes!

The End of the War in Iraq

Today the US Military formally ended the war in Iraq. Troops are coming home, bases being turned back over.

Thank you to all the men and women that fought for our freedom in Iraq. An even bigger thank you to those that kept me safe during my few years in this country, your hard work and dedication is why I am still here today.

Many many memories in this place for me and I hope someday its safe enough to go back for a visit.

There are lots of wonderful Iraqi’s and so many historic places throughout Iraq. This used to be a travel destination for the Middle East. If I ever had children (or nieces/nephews) I would love to take them to see the eternal flame, Babylon, the Tigris River, and all of the palaces I once worked in. Along with allowing them to experience the culture of this region.

Sadly I have several friends who never returned home – to them I am forever grateful as they made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you.

Best of luck to Iraq in their quest for freedom, stability, safety, and becoming a country united not divided.

How Fancy Must Your Tree Be???

Have you ever used a cedar tree for a Christmas Tree?? I did once several years ago but it’s almost impossible to decorate with the long scraggly branches.

I almost tried it again this year purely because there are an abundance of them growing at my parents house and our cabin….

It’s almost like a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree. Can you love the beauty of it’s non-uniformity and lack of lushness? Or do you need a traditional tree??

I will definitely use cedar branches to fill my urns and other spots I want fresh greenery as free is always a good thing! Plus thinking with a little glitter spray they can be just as lovely as other greenery.

Our Y Strong Kids Campaign Concert/Fundraiser was a huge success. Especially since it was our first year. We raised $3,500 at the pre-event!!

And we raised another $1,600 on ticket sales from the concert. So over $5,000 raised in one evening to help provide scholarship to those in need so they can enjoy the Y, sports programs, swim lessons, and other productive activities. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to all that donated, participated, and volunteered. I am thankful there are so many generous people in our community.

I even overcame my stage freight to play a lil tamborine for the event! Who knew I could be a member of a band with no musical talent!!!

Glitter Goodness for my Camera!!!

This is something I must steal and recreate!! How perfect is this camera strap?? And just in time for holiday festivities!!

you will need:
course glitter // mod podge // fabric glue // rhinestones

Step One
mix mod podge & glitter, adding one part course glitter to two parts mod podge in a small bowl
Step Two
brush on to strap and let dry
Step Three
apply a second layer and let dry
Step Four
you may wish to apply a third layer [optional]
Step Five
apply rhinestones to the ends of the strap, with fabric or crazy glue
Step Six
and that's it! easy, easy [a glimpse of the finished project here]

We are in the midst of fall and unfortunately I think winter is about to come sprinting in.

I have been so busy lately seems I haven’t even had a chance to enjoy the season.

I’m not even close to tackling the items on my fall bucket list! Guess there is always next year.

Beer and Bagel

This was my first year for the Beer and Bagel Run. The morning was pretty chilly but once we started running the temperature seemed perfect. For some reason though I just had no energy for the run and definitely no speed.

I managed to be a klutz and trip over some obstacle at the very start and it threw me off the entire run. Plus the hills were killer and the three creeks we ran through added a lil to my time as well. Final results:

Overall Place: 1355 of 2106
Place in Gender: 683 of 1261

Definitely nothing to write home about or get excited over. More of a motivator that I need to get back into running on a regular basis and push myself harder. But bad time aside it was a blast! The course is scenic and a lot of people dress up. After the run you are able to get unlimited beer and there was a fun DJ cranking out tunes. Who doesn’t love a party at 10 am on a Sunday???

Isn’t garlic supposed to chase away vampires? Anyway, I decided to try a fall planting of garlic in hopes of a spring harvest.

This is the first time I have planted garlic so hoping I did it correctly. Truthfully, I’m not a huge fan of garlic but figure I can share with family, friends, and neighbors.

Apple Picking

I LOVE going to the apple orchard and carefully picking each apple off the tree. Crazy I know. We are lucky as have this great orchard – Ditmars Orchard – right outside of town.

I picked enough apples to not only make several of these fun lil apple tarts for a charity dinner.

But also to make apple crisp for family dinner.

And hopefully apple sauce if I get to cooking before the apples spoil!

Fixture Dreaming

My bathroom is under a much needed cosmetic renovation. It’s been frustrating as I want vintage looking fixtures but due to a wall mount type sink I seem to keep coming up empty. I also don’t have a shower in this bath – only a tub. So really really want this:
But seriously its $1395!!! I really would prefer to not pay over a $1000 for tub fixtures. Any advice? There has to be a cheaper version somewhere?

Farm Stalking

There is a farm in Niobrara I have been in love with for as long as I can remember. As a child I went with my grandparents to a barn dance they held. I always wished it were mine.

The farm went for sale when I was in college – sadly a college student does not have funds necessary to acquire a farm even though it was quite reasonably priced.

Lately this farm has been more or less abandoned. Its owners have aged and never seem to visit. Several locals watch over the property, graze cattle on the land, etc… But no one lives in the house and gives it the needed TLC.

I run by this house every time I visit the area and dream of what I would do if it were mine. I even sent the owner a letter offering to purchase the farm – but have not yet heard back. It needs a new owner to breathe life back into it! The barn needs a yearly dance! Let's hope they eventually decide to pass this gem on to me!

Aeisha Needs Prayers

My poor precious lil kitty somehow tore her Cornia really bad over the weekend. I woke up Saturday morning to a one eye kitty and knew something was wrong. After an emergency vet visit they decided to do surgery to fix the tear and attach her third eye over her normal eye to allow healing??

Poor lil thing is just not happy and I am sure she is very uncomfortable with the stitches, third eye, and lack of sight in her eye at the moment. Her and I could use a few prayers that this month goes fast (she has to keep this “patch” on her eye for a month) and that her sight is restored at the end. I am probably more of a mess than the kitty! I know, she is just an animal, but I love her to pieces so hate seeing her in discomfort.

Market To Market

We were M2M Virgins this year but still managed to pull off a third place finish in the all female division!! Woot Woot Annie and the Orphans!! We finished the 78 mile relay race with a time of 10:42:20, an average pace of 8.23 a mile. SPEEDY I am telling you. I of course did not contribute to this speed but did have an amazing first run (5.35 miles finished in 49:32 which is crazy good for me), second run was very very average (4.2 miles finished in ??? unfortunately forgot to record my final time but it was around 39).

Next year I will train much differently. Thinking speed work and two-a- day runs. That second run was brutal. Way harder than running a half marathon I think? Sure the halfl marathon 6 days prior didn’t help with my fatigue either. I will also bring a LOT less stuff! Other than removing layers as the weather warmed up we never changed clothes, so all the extra outfits were unnecessary. We also entertained each other just fine so I could have left the magazines at home. The Iphone/internet was essential though. At one point we were all cracking up that our team seemed to be commenting the most on teammates status updates. Love it!

Honestly a great great day with an outstanding group of women! I also can't rave enough about the race organizers. This race was unbelievably organized and everyone was so kind throughout the day. Can’t wait to compete again next year. Now to think of a theme…

Omaha Half Marathon 2011

I felt highly unprepared for this race – but that seems to be the story of my running career. It was a very chilly morning, and my Garmin was dead :( Things were not looking good for me and the Omaha Half! Luckily the weather improved and it turned out to be a great (although VER VERY hilly) race with my two best running buddies.

Miraculously even with no watch/Garmin, several beers the night prior at a wedding, and a light training schedule I still managed to finish with a 2:12 time. Not my fastest but not my worst either. My 10k split was 1:00 which was decent. Overall wish I would have pushed myself a lil more but with no clue how fast I was going it was quite difficult. Amazing how dependent one gets on technology!

I went on my first Bike ride that consisted of more than just a few miles over the weekend. Must say I am hooked! It was a blast! With a view like this who wouldn’t be enthralled.

However, my helmet did not want to stay on my head properly! So thinking I need one of these lovelies for my next ride.

And while I’m at it I probably need this very stylish jacket (plus a percentage of proceeds go to breast cancer research – bonus).

Maybe this will be the year I finally make it to Sturgis!

Preserve Council Bluffs will showcase more homes during its fourth annual Preservation Promenade: Fine Dining in Historic Homes on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The event will begin with a reception at 6 p.m. at the Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce, 149 W. Broadway, offering guests an opportunity to get a closer look at the historic Hughes-Irons Building.

“The people will be assigned their houses at that time, and then they’ll basically spend the rest of the evening at that house,” said Wayne Andersen, a member of the Preserve Council Bluffs Board of Directors.

This fall’s tour will include eight restored houses, instead of the usual six, he said. The houses date from the 1880s to about 1920.

Guests will enjoy a multi-course, Victorian-style dinner with six or eight other guests amid elegant surroundings, Andersen said.

“It’s basically an intimate affair,” he said. “It’s not like when you’re in a noisy restaurant.”

The homes will include:

The Everest House, 125 S. Third St.;
The Jennings House, 201 Third St.;
The Davis House, 526 Third St.;
The H.H. Field House, 126 Park Ave.;
The Jay C. Aid House, 211 Park Ave.;
The Thomas D. Metcalf Jr. House, 528 Clark Ave.;
The Carlton Woodward House, 608 Oakland Ave.; and
The O.P. Wickham House, 616 S. Seventh St.

The Davis House, service center for local Girl Scouts from 1994 until it was sold in November 2010, might be of special interest.

“To the best of my knowledge, the Davis House has not been on a tour for 10 or 15 years,” Andersen said.

The house is a 1919 example of an eclectic Prairie School home with some Italian Renaissance influence.

All of the homes have been painstakingly restored – or are in the process of being restored, said Andersen, himself an owner of a Victorian home.

“It takes a lot of time and effort to restore these,” he said. “It’s a labor of love.”

At this time, it appears that Preserve Council Bluffs will not be offering a December tour this year, Andersen said.

“We had some houses lined up, but then some homeowners had some hail damage, and they want to get that taken care of first,” he said.

Reservations are $65 per person/$80 to request a specific house. Group seating will be granted as space allows. Seating is limited. Proceeds will be used to promote preservation in Council Bluffs.

Daunting

Have you ever had a project that you just can’t motivate yourself to finish? It’s too tricky, or too time consuming, or whatever the case may be? These boards (this pic only shows a small amount of the boards) have been that project for me.

I have had them almost two years and they have been taunting me every time I walk in the basement or look at the horrendous trim in my main living areas.

But staining is not a process I am comfortable with (the first attempt was a mess)and this seemed such a large daunting task. Thankfully, I finally pulled the trigger over the weekend and tackled the boards. They are now ready for installation! Can’t wait to see how much better several rooms look with proper molding, trim, etc…. And even more thankful this task is no longer taunting me.

The House that Built Me

When is a home in such a state of disrepair and neglect that the best course of action is a tear down/burn??

How do you tear down and burn up memories? I didn’t think I was sentimental about houses (I was more than happy to leave my first childhood home years ago!) but for some reason this stinking cabin has me torn. So many memories were made here, so much growing up done, time spent with immediate family, grandparents, great grandparents, uncles, and friends.

Part of me keeps thinking raise it up, fix the roof, the siding, the windows, the interior, and the list goes on and on….But then the practical side kicks in and I realize could probably build a new much nicer cabin for cheaper.

Rough Riders Trial Ride

Every year on Labor Day the Rough Riders host a trail ride departing from Verdel, Nebraska. You bring your horse.

They map out the route which consists of riding through farm fields, along a ride overlooking the Missouri River, along the Missouri River, a stop at a Gravel pit for refreshments, and then an easy jaunt home through more fields and gravel roads.

The scenery is amazing and the people are diverse and entertaining. This was my first year experiencing the trail ride and I am hooked!

I loved every minute of the ride on my stellar borrowed horse Tommy.

*Sadly I didn't take any pics (these were compliments of a friend) as was afraid I would loose/break my phone/camera if I took it along. Next year...

Fairmont Park Neighborhood Association - Yard of the Month

My neighborhood hosts a contest all summer where they chose a yard each month to be “Yard of the Month”. They only consider your front yard and judge based on overall appearance. I was elated and honored to be chosen this July as yard of the month! All the hard work, sweat, and dirt paid off! And those that know me well know I am crazy about my yard so this was very very exciting news to me!

I am telling you this place was GORGEOUS!!

So I figure it’s worth one more blog post.

The views made walking miles and miles and trekking thousands of feet painless as always something to stop and snap a pic of or admire.

Enjoy - I would highly recommend this hike if ever in the area. If you take your time, take lots of water, and a few snacks you’ll eventually make it to the top!

Blue Ridge Mountains – Humpback Gap

I was in Virginia about a month ago for a JAG Contracting course. Over the weekend a few of us decided to hike the Blue Ridge Mountain, specifically up to Humpback Gap to check out the amazing view.

The hike was quite treacherous and almost straight up on a wide variety of terrains.

The view at the top was breathtaking!

The boys were quite nervy out on the edge.

However, I was a lil terrified and kept a tight grip on the rock at all times and never venturing too close to the edge.

On the way back we decided to take the “less than 3 mile” less drastic decline route to check out the Appalachian Trail and have a small picnic.

Gorgeous – but 3 miles felt longer than expected due to the constant climb and descent we traversed.

Plus the sky was starting to look frightening…

Of course instead of dropping us near our vehicle as promised this dropped us approximately three miles away.

Before we were even a mile in the sky opened up and one of the worst thunder/lightening/rain storms I have ever witnessed was upon us. We started sprinting down the road/mountain towards our car. Waterfalls appeared out of nowhere, the rain was so ferocious it hurt, and you could barely see your hand in front of you. Scary stuff but we laughed and made the best of it. Thankfully about two miles in some good Samaritans picked us up and gave us a ride the final mile.

Don’t we look lovely!! I hid in the back for a reason – mass amounts of rain/white tank top. Such an adventurous day and I would gladly repeat even with the rain.

His concerts at Stir Cover are always amazing!! (this is his third year in a row performing there and he shot his music video for Drink in My Hand at Stir!). This year was even better than prior as Christine and I got to meet him in person and snap a few pics.

Boar’s Head Spa

I was in Charlottesville, VA for JAG training. It turned out to be a rough few weeks for me – capped off with a root canal of all things! After that I decided to treat myself to my first ever Anthropology shopping experience and a visit to the Spa. A friend recommend Boar’s Head Inn and I can’t rave about it enough.

The setting was breathtaking, serene, and relaxing.

And the Spa was amazing. The staff went above and beyond, it was pristine, and included all kinds of extra touches to make you feel pampered (loose leaf tea, fluffy robes, real sandals, individual shower sponges – combs – etc… for after the spa).

I had a massage, facial, and enjoyed the steam room. Heaven! Followed by smoothie compliments of the resorts bartender! If you are in the area I highly suggest a visit!

Union Pacific Home Plate

I am way behind on College World Series (CWS) pictures so time to catch up. This was the first year at TD Ameritrade stadium and personally I loved the new location and new stadium! One bonus feature was the Union Pacific Home Plate loacted right next to the new Stadium.

They brought in the iconic No. 844 steam locomotive:

I found out my great grandfather actually designed the cover on these original steam engines!

A fleet of historic Heritage cars were parked near the very site where the transcontinental railroad began!

And invited guests to come enjoy the cars, view, and history:

My grandpa retired from the UP so this was a lot of fun letting him relieve his memories of working on these trains and hearing stories about the olden days. I had a great evening with him!

Highway 12

Highway 12 goes past our land and through the town of Niobrara.

Right now a solid portion of it is closed due to the flooding.

We can’t even access our land which is a lil sad. If you look at the below pictures and look towards the right you can see a little white house. That is our old cabin (which I wish was still habitable as out in the peaceful country!).

The bridge in the background is Chief Standing Bear Bridge which connects Niobrara, NE to Springfield, SD.

It is currently closed as well since access on the NE side is under water.

Front Porch Swinging

I love having a front porch, and love love love the porch swing. For some reason having a porch swing has always been a big deal even though I don’t particularly like to sit on said swing as I get motion sick…

Every year my porch is starting to feel a lil more inviting. Now if I could just find a bit more time to relax with a glass of wine and good book!

Breaking the Rules

On a recent weekend adventure I risked a scolding by the flight attendants for operating electronic equipment while ascending into the sky to snap a few pictures of the Flood of 2011 near Eppley Airfield.

Luckily I didn’t get caught and was able to capture several birds’ eye pictures of the damage.

Fresh Herbs

Using fresh herbs transforms any dish from ho hum to pow if you ask me.

And growing your own herbs seems foolproof and easy. I have had great success the last few years. I started with this small wheelbarrow full of a few hers (mostly mint and lemon verbena for ice tea).

And have progressed on to the wheelbarrow, plus this cool old wagon wheel my dad gave me, and a few scattered in the garden.
It’s very enjoyable being to walk outside and snip off a few fresh herbs whenever I am cooking or mixing up a drink. Everything tastes better with fresh herbs added.

Now I just need to figure out how to dry and save some for the loooong winter months. Any pointers?
